Weekday holidayHoliday on a weekendWeekendToday

Muhurat trading 2026

Sunday, 8 November 2026 (Diwali Laxmi Pujan). Exchanges usually hold a one-hour Muhurat session on Diwali to mark the new Samvat year. The exact timing is notified by the exchange close to the date. Normal trading is closed the rest of the day, and Diwali-Balipratipada on 10 November is a full holiday.

How market holidays affect your trades

A closed market is not a pause for your risk. Four things to keep in mind before a break.

Expiry moves earlier

If an F&O expiry day is a trading holiday, expiry moves to the previous trading day. Check the date before you hold a position.

Weekend and long-break gaps

News can arrive while the market is shut, so price may open far from the last close. Stops cannot protect you from a gap.

Option time decay keeps running

Option prices count calendar days to expiry. A long break can reduce time value even though nothing trades.

Settlement and funds shift

Payouts and settlements move to the next working day when a holiday falls in between. Plan your cash needs.

Market holiday questions, answered

How many stock market holidays are there in 2026?

On this list there are 16 weekday trading holidays for NSE and BSE equity and derivatives, plus 4 holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday. Exchanges can add or change dates, so always confirm with the latest NSE, BSE or MCX circular.

Is the stock market open on Saturday and Sunday?

No. NSE and BSE are closed every Saturday and Sunday. The only exception is a special session announced by the exchange, such as Muhurat trading on Diwali when it falls on a weekend.

Is there Muhurat trading in 2026?

Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, and exchanges usually hold a one-hour Muhurat trading session that day. The exact timing is announced by the exchange closer to the date.

Does MCX close on the same days as NSE and BSE?

Not always. MCX has separate morning and evening sessions, and on many exchange holidays only the morning session is shut. On some days it is closed all day. Check the MCX circular for session timings.

What happens to my F&O expiry if it falls on a holiday?

The expiry normally moves to the previous trading day. Look at the contract details and the exchange circular so you are not caught out.
