India’s stock market is having a strange year. The Nifty 50 has fallen 13% in 2026, putting it on track for its worst year since 2011. Yet a small group of AI-linked stocks has been surging. If you’re learning to trade, this split between the index and the AI trade is one of the most useful market lessons of 2026. thestar
What’s Happening in the Market?
Half of the top 10 gainers on the Nifty 500 this year are indirectly linked to AI. The standout is Sterlite Technologies, an optical fibre cable maker, which has risen 804% this year to become the Nifty 500’s top performer. thestarthestar
Goldman Sachs found a similar pattern. A group of 42 “AI enabler” stocks (power, semiconductors, data centres) rose 60% while the Nifty fell about 12%. newsbytesapp
Why India’s AI Trade Looks Different
India has no TSMC or Samsung. It lacks listed makers of the advanced chips behind frontier AI models, which is why South Korea and Taiwan captured much of the AI gains. thestar
So Indian investors are buying proxies, companies that supply what AI needs to run:
- Data centre builders and power companies. JLL estimates India’s data centre capacity could nearly quadruple from 1.6 GW in mid-2026 to 6 GW by 2029. thestar
- Fibre and networking. Analysts at Nomura describe a demand supercycle for optical fibre cable. thestar
- Power and electrical equipment. CG Power and Adani Power are among the biggest gainers on the Nifty Infrastructure index. thestar
Not every AI story is positive. In February, Indian IT stocks fell sharply on fears that AI-led automation could squeeze billing rates and margins. AI has created winners and losers in the same market. letsdatascience
Is the AI Rally Sustainable?
Be cautious. Investors warn that after the sharp rally, stretched valuations mean any slowdown in AI spending could hurt these stocks. An 800% gain is the kind of move that can reverse quickly. kfgo
Three questions to ask before chasing any AI stock:
- Does AI actually drive its revenue? A company appearing on an “AI stocks” list doesn’t mean AI is where its revenue comes from.
- Is the valuation already pricing in years of growth? Analysts defend the high prices by pointing to expected earnings growth into 2027 and 2028. That is a forecast, not a certainty. newsbytesapp
- What’s your risk limit? Decide your stop-loss and position size before you enter.
Is AI Trading Legal in India?
Many new traders ask this. AI trading is legal in India, with conditions. SEBI’s retail algo framework applies to order flow, not to analysis. sahi
In practice:
- Using AI for analysis (screeners, indicators, research assistants) is not regulated like algo trading.
- Automated order placement falls under SEBI’s retail algo rules. These have been fully mandatory since April 1, 2026, and API users now need a static IP. dev
- The wider AI rulebook isn’t final. SEBI’s June 2025 consultation paper on responsible AI and ML use was still only a draft as of August 2026. sahi
One more warning: be wary of any product that promises guaranteed returns from “AI.” An AI label doesn’t change the risk of trading.
What This Means for New Traders
- Learn the market before you chase a theme. The Nifty and the AI trade have moved in opposite directions this year.
- Understand sectors and proxies. Knowing how supply chains, power demand and capex cycles feed into stock prices is a core skill.
- Use AI as a tool. It helps you screen and research faster, but it doesn’t replace risk management.
- Don’t chase vertical charts. Plan entries, exits and position sizing before the trade.

FAQs
Why is the Nifty falling while AI stocks rise?
India has few direct AI companies, so the rally is concentrated in infrastructure proxies like fibre, power and data centres, while the broader market has struggled.
Which Indian stocks benefit from AI?
Mostly data centre, power, networking and electrical equipment companies, plus IT firms selling AI services. Research each one before investing.
Is AI trading legal in India?
Yes, with conditions. Automated order execution falls under SEBI’s retail algo framework.

Honest notes on ranking:
- One article won’t rank on its own. A new or small domain needs backlinks and several related posts. Publish this as the main article and follow with 3 to 4 linked posts, such as “AI trading rules in India,” “Technical analysis basics” and “Stock market course in Delhi.”
- Add a short “Last updated” date. Google favors fresh content on trending topics, and the figures above will go stale.
- Add the FAQ as FAQ schema markup, and link internally to your course pages.
- Add 1 or 2 original charts. The Nifty vs AI-enabler chart would suit this article, and original visuals help more than text alone.
- Add your own analysis or a student/trainer quote if you can. That is what separates the post from the other AI-stock lists.
