Thermometer reading
0 = cheapest, 100 = most stretched month since 2001
The Thermometer uses the international price in rupees, without import duty, so that 25 years compare like with like. India’s duty has changed several times, most recently to 15% in May 2026, which is why prices at Indian jewellers have fallen less than the international price.
What happened next in the past?
Since 2001, gold was in the Cheap zone in 77 months. A year later, gold was higher in 75% of those cases, with a typical (median) change of +7.3%. Across all months, gold was higher a year later 83% of the time.
This is what happened in the past, not a forecast. Gold can fall even when history looks favourable.

What moves the gold price?
- US interest rates. Gold pays no interest, so it tends to lose appeal when rates rise and gain when they fall.
- The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars worldwide; a stronger dollar usually weighs on it.
- Central bank buying. Central banks around the world have been large buyers of gold in recent years.
- Uncertainty. Wars, financial stress and inflation fears push investors toward gold as a safe haven.
- The rupee. When the rupee weakens, gold costs more in India even if the global price is flat. Over the last 10 years, about 23% of gold’s rise in rupees came from the rupee.
- Import duty and local demand. India’s import duty (15% since May 2026) and wedding and festival buying affect local prices and dealer premiums.
Why is gold more expensive in India?
India imports most of its gold, so local prices start from the international price, then add import duty (15% since 13 May 2026), 3% GST when you buy, and making charges on jewellery. Prices also vary a little between cities because of transport, local taxes and dealer margins.

| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery | Wearing, gifting and weddings | Making charges and GST add to the cost, and resale usually loses the making charges. |
| Gold coins and bars | Pure 24K gold with low making charges | Safe storage; buy hallmarked coins from trusted sellers. |
| Gold ETFs | Low-cost investing through a demat account on NSE or BSE | Brokerage and a small yearly expense ratio. |
| Gold mutual funds | Monthly SIPs without a demat account | Slightly higher costs than ETFs. |
| Digital gold | Buying very small amounts in apps | Not regulated by SEBI; check who stores the gold and how you can sell. |
| Sovereign Gold Bonds | Government bonds linked to the gold price | Check RBI for any new issues; existing bonds trade on exchanges with low volumes. |
How the Gold Thermometer works
- We take today’s international gold price and convert it to rupees per 10 grams using the latest USD/INR rate.
- We compare it with gold’s average price over the previous 12 months. Gold rises over the long run, so the raw price is almost always near a record. The gap from its own recent average shows whether gold has run ahead of itself.
- We compare today’s gap with the same gap for every month since 2001, and place it on the gauge.
| Zone | Today’s gap compared with months since 2001 |
|---|---|
| Cheap | Bottom 25% of months |
| Fair | 25% to 60% |
| Expensive | 60% to 85% |
| Very expensive | Top 15% of months |
How to use this reading
- Buying jewellery for a wedding or festival? Buy what you need when you need it. The reading tells you whether you are paying a stretched price, which can help you decide between buying all at once or in parts.
- Investing in gold? Many long-term investors buy a little every month through gold ETFs or gold mutual funds, which smooths out expensive and cheap phases.
- Trading gold? An expensive reading is not a sell signal. Gold can stay expensive for months. Traders still need a plan, a stop-loss and the right position size.
