What forex really is
Forex, short for foreign exchange, is the swapping of one currency for another. Every price is a ratio between two economies, so when you buy one currency you are automatically selling the other. Here is how to read a quote at a glance.

Currency trading passes from Sydney to Tokyo, then London and New York. Drag the clock to see which centres are awake at any moment in Indian time, and when the busy overlaps happen.
Hours are approximate and shift by about an hour when Europe and the US change their clocks.

Legalities
Forex law in India, made simple
Unauthorised forex apps advertise heavily in India, and RBI has repeatedly warned the public about them. Before any chart, we teach the rules.
- FEMA governs it. The Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 decides who may deal in foreign currency. RBI writes the detailed rules.
- Exchange-traded only. Residents may trade currency derivatives on SEBI-recognised exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE) through SEBI-registered brokers.
- RBI keeps an Alert List. It names entities that are not authorised to run forex platforms. Many of them advertise on social media and messaging apps.
- No overseas margin. Money sent abroad under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme cannot be used to pay margin to foreign brokers or exchanges.
- Breaking the rules has consequences. Unauthorised forex dealing can lead to action under FEMA, and money lost on illegal platforms is very hard to recover.
- Tax applies. Gains from exchange-traded currency derivatives are generally taxed as non-speculative business income.
