What Is IPO GMP? Meaning, Formula and How Accurate It Was in 2026

IPO GMP (grey market premium) is the extra price traders say they will pay for an IPO share before it lists. Here is what it means, how to calculate the expected listing price, and what 2026’s listings show about how far you can trust it.

IPO GMP meaning in simple words

Before an IPO lists on NSE or BSE, some traders buy and sell the right to its shares in an informal, unofficial market called the grey market. The grey market premium (GMP) is how much above the issue price those traders are willing to pay.

If an IPO is priced at ₹271 and the GMP is ₹69, grey market traders expect the share to list at around ₹340. A positive GMP signals strong demand; a zero or negative GMP signals the stock may list flat or below its issue price.

Important: the grey market is not run or regulated by SEBI, NSE or BSE. GMP figures come from informal dealers and are reported differently by different websites. Treat GMP as a sentiment signal, never as a promise.

How to calculate expected listing price from GMP

Expected listing price = Upper price band + GMP
GMP % = GMP ÷ Upper price band × 100
Expected profit per lot = GMP × Lot size

Example with real numbers (HD Fire Protect, October 2026): the upper price band was ₹271 and one lot was 55 shares. On 20 October, a day before listing, the GMP was reported at ₹69.

  • Expected listing price = 271 + 69 = ₹340
  • GMP % = 69 ÷ 271 × 100 = 25.5%
  • Expected profit per lot = 69 × 55 = ₹3,795 (before charges and tax)

It actually opened at ₹335 on NSE, a 23.6% gain, very close to what GMP suggested. But it closed the same day at ₹306.75, only 13.2% above the issue price. GMP points at the opening price, not where the stock settles.

How accurate was IPO GMP in 2026?

A study of 109 mainboard IPOs that listed up to 28 October 2026, published by Multibagg AI, compared the GMP just before listing with the actual listing gain:

0.91Correlation between GMP % and listing gain %
82%Positive-GMP IPOs that listed above issue price
80%Listed within 10 percentage points of GMP
7 ptsAverage miss between GMP and actual gain

Source: Multibagg AI, “Indian Mainboard IPOs: GMP Gets Direction Right, Not Magnitude”, 31 October 2026. The underlying trackers’ methods are not published.

What this means for you: for mainboard IPOs, GMP usually gets the direction right (profit or loss on listing) but is often off on the size of the gain. A separate comparison in the same study found GMP implied an average 21.8% gain while the actual average was 18.8%, so GMP tends to be slightly too optimistic.

When GMP goes wrong

  • SME IPOs are far less reliable. In the same 2026 data, only 63% of SME IPOs listed within 10 points of GMP, against 80% of mainboard IPOs. SME grey markets are thin, so a few dealers can move the number.
  • Big surprises still happen. Bonfiglioli Transmissions had a final GMP of about 21.7% in October 2026, yet opened flat at its ₹586 issue price.
  • Market crashes on listing day. If Nifty falls sharply the morning a stock lists, GMP from the previous evening becomes stale.
  • Early GMP means little. GMP quoted before the price band or subscription data is out swings widely. The figure a day before listing is the one to watch.

How to use GMP sensibly before applying

  1. Check subscription, not just GMP. Strong QIB (institutional) demand is a better sign than a high GMP alone. HD Fire Protect’s QIB portion was subscribed 256 times.
  2. Watch the GMP trend over 3–5 days. A steady or rising GMP is more meaningful than one high number. A falling GMP is a warning.
  3. Compare several sources. GMP sites often show different figures for the same IPO.
  4. Look at the business. Valuation, debt and profit growth matter if you plan to hold after listing. Our free IPO Analyzer scores any IPO on these checks.
  5. Never borrow to apply because GMP is high. Allotment is a lottery, and listing gains are not guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

What is GMP in IPO?

GMP, or grey market premium, is the amount above the issue price at which IPO shares are informally traded before they list on the stock exchange. It shows how much demand traders expect on listing day.

How do I calculate the listing price from GMP?

Add the GMP to the upper price band. If the price band is ₹271 and GMP is ₹69, the expected listing price is ₹340. This is only an estimate.

Is IPO GMP accurate?

For mainboard IPOs in 2026, GMP got the direction of the listing right about 80% of the time, but the actual gain often differed by several percentage points. For SME IPOs it was much less reliable.

Is GMP legal in India?

The grey market is informal and not regulated by SEBI or the stock exchanges. Deals there are not protected by any exchange, so you have no recourse if the other side does not honour them. Only apply through your broker or bank using ASBA or UPI.

What does negative GMP mean?

A negative GMP means grey market traders expect the IPO to list below its issue price, indicating weak demand.

When is GMP most reliable?

The GMP in the last day or two before listing, after subscription has closed, is generally the most useful. GMP quoted weeks ahead often changes sharply.

Should I apply to an IPO only because GMP is high?

No. Combine GMP with subscription data, especially QIB demand, the company’s valuation and financials. A high GMP can fall quickly if market sentiment turns.
